Dear Peter G.,

Your Question: Is MASTERBATION [biblically] acceptable?

My Answer: Thank you for visiting my web site, and submitting your question. I pray that my Holy Father in heaven will grant you spiritual understanding and wisdom in His word. Now, your spelling of the word that I believe you are asking is incorrect. For a search of the dictionary, does not reveal a word spelled as such. However, if my first glance at the word is correct then you mean probably "masturbation". Therefore, I will answer your question from this point of view.

The Lord and Savior Christ Jesus plainly tells us that sin starts in the mind. For it is written, "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell" (Matthew 5:27-29 NIV). As this Scripture tells us, when we think evil thoughts we sin, and in all sexual self-gratification the person thinks of some event involving the sexual act or lustfully think of having sexual relations with someone they wish to have sexual relationships with.

Most of us would like for our sin to only be the actual act of sinful behavior and not what we think, but sin begins in the mind. For if we think evil of our fellow brothers and sisters, then sin is standing at the door waiting to destroy us. Let us look at the story of "Cain and Abel" for example: God said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it" (Genesis 4:6-7 NIV). But Cain chose to ignore God’s admonition and acted on his anger by planning to kill his brother Abel because God favored Abel and his offering. So, you see Peter, Cain sin to commit murder began in his mind by being anger enough with his brother to plot to kill him. Had Cain resisted his angry thoughts towards his brother, he would have mastered the sin crouching at his door. Again, Christ Jesus tells us that, "out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander" Matthew 15:19 NIV). Sexual self-gratification is sexual immorality.

Yes, Peter we all suffer in this sinful nature of ours, but we must continue to resist sin in our mind and master it. For even as the apostle Paul struggled with sin in his mind, we as true followers of Christ Jesus struggle with sin in our minds, and there are times we lose the battle (Romans 7). And when we lose these battles with sin the Holy Spirit tells us that, "When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death" (James 1:13-15 NIV). Now, desire here are evil thoughts seeking to entice you to commit the physical act of sin, which begins in the mind.

But we have a High Priest and a Mediator, the Man Christ Jesus who will delivery us from this body of death (Hebrews 2:17-18 and 1 Timothy 2:3-6). For God is faithful, and He will forgive our sins, if we confess them to Him (1 John 1:8-10). As it is written, "Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God – through Jesus Christ our Lord!" (Romans 7:24-25 NKJV). And again the Spirit says, "if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One" (1 John 2:1 NIV).

Therefore, I exhort you to resist evil thoughts in your mind. And do not entertain thoughts that come into your mind of sexual self-gratification called masturbation. Do not give up in your struggle to resist sin. For in due time you we receive your reward. Yes, as it is written, "He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels" (Revelation 3:5 NIV). And if you lose a battle against sin then confess your sin to the One whom can save you, the Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ. I pray that God give you understanding in His holy and righteous word. Amen. Praise God.
